Today we are pleased to highlight Shoe Leather, the six-season investigative podcast from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Shoe Leather was recently featured as a Spotify “New Show Release” for its newest season about Rudy Giuliani.
Shoe Leather is written and produced by Journalism students under the instruction of Joanne Faryon. The podcast is published in collaboration with the Columbia Libraries as part of the Podcast Publishing Program. Shoe Leather digs up stories from New York City’s past—to find out how yesterday’s news affects us today. Past seasons have explored the killing of Amadou Diallo, the police riot at Tompkins Square Park, and the stories that made the news the day before 9/11.
This season, Shoe Leather takes a deep dive into the life and career of Rudy Giuliani, one of the most influential politicians in New York City’s recent history. Before he was disbarred and bankrupt, before all the trouble, Giuliani rose to prominence as a prosecutor and a politician. As America’s mayor, he had one of the highest approval ratings of all time among New Yorkers. He was even knighted by the Queen of England. So, how does that person end up bankrupt and ridiculed? How did America’s Mayor end up betraying the very values he built his career on?
Over six episodes, the Shoe Leather team uncovers the many twists and turns of Giuliani’s complicated life. Reporters tracked down Giuliani’s high school and college friends, his former colleagues from his time as a prosecutor and some of the people closest to him while he was mayor. This season tells a story of a man once consumed by law and order, who was ambitious and who craved the spotlight—whose need to be relevant may have overshadowed his judgement, according to people who knew him.
Season six episodes dropped May 13th. Listen to the full show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and the Columbia Libraries‘ website. Follow @shoeleathercast on social media for more information and updates.
